Are you searching for a food subscription box that’s fresh, healthy and affordable? Well, hopefully my Gousto box review will help you decide whether this is one of the many meal subscription services out there, that’s right for you.
What is Gousto?
Gousto is a food subscription box which allows you to select from over 75 recipes per week to be delivered, fresh to your door. After trying Hello Fresh for many months, my honest opinion is that Gusto is by far the better, and healthier, option out of the two meal subscription services. You simply select how many people you’re looking to feed, how often you’d like the box delivered and which day to suit your meal planning, and whether you have any dietary requirements.

What are the best Gousto recipes?
As mentioned, you can choose from over 75 recipes per week, with a wide variety of options: vegetarian, low-calorie, speedy meals in just 10 minutes, or more hearty family-friendly recipes you’ll all love. We’ve been having their meal boxes delivered for two months now and below are the best Gousto recipes we’ve tried so far:
- Simply Perfect Lean Beef Spag Bol – the best spag bol we’ve ever made!
- Crispy Smoky Basa with Creamed Leeks and Roast Potatoes
- Sweet Pepper & Tomato Sauce with Tomato & Mozzarella Tortelloni
- Thai-Style Lean Beef Mince Rice with Mangetout
- Smoky Fishcakes with Wilted Greens & Curried Mayo
- One-Pot Cheesy Haddock & Leek Chowder

Gousto prices
Well, we all know this is the first thing to look for when it comes to signing up to any of the meal subscription services! Here are Gousto* prices as of November 2023 before any Gousto discount you may get as a new customer (see below).
Regular food subscription box
Suitable for 2 adults (or 1 adult + 1 leftover) or 1 adult + 1-2 small children portions. Depending on how many meals you opt to have delivered per week, the price per meal box ranges from £24.99 (2 meals – £6.25 per portion) to £42.95 (5 meals – £4.30 per portion). If you opt solely for their Save and Savour recipes, this could be from £22.99 (2 meals – £5.75 per portion) to £37.99 (5 meals – £3.80 per portion).
Large food subscription box
Suitable for 4 adults (or 1-2 adults + 2-3 leftovers) or 2 adults + 2-3 small children portions. Depending on how many meals you opt to have delivered per week, the price per meal box ranges from £31.75 (2 meals – £3.97 per portion) to £47.85 (4 meals – £2.99 per portion). The only downfall to this option is you’re limited to only 4 meals per box, but a work around would be to have two deliveries per week if you wanted all meals to come from Gousto, but this wouldn’t be cost-effective in my opinion. If you opt solely for their Save and Savour recipes, this could be from £27.75 (2 meals – £3.47 per portion) to £39.85 (4 meals – £2.49 per portion).
You then have a flat delivery fee of £1.99 per recipe box.
The more meals you select per meal box, the more cost-effective. We have 5 meals per week delivered every Monday to cover our work week. Even with needing to nip to the shop weekly to get other essentials like milk, breakfast items and lunches, this still works out far cheaper than a weekly food shop at the supermarket with current food prices. Plus, no food waste!
What’s inside the box?
When your subscription box has been delivered, you’ll find every ingredient, pre-portioned, that you need. Now, this is slightly different to HelloFresh where they group all ingredients per recipe together in a numbered bag so you can simply pull that bag from the fridge. Gousto on the other hand has all ingredients loose and you just pick what you need according to your recipe card. It’s not a dealbreaker in my eyes, it just takes an extra 20 seconds to make sure you’ve picked everything you need.
Can you buy extras, like sides?
Yes! This is where I also think Gusto is far better than HelloFresh as their ‘extras’ section has a wide variety. You can add things like extra vegetables, naan breads, garlic bread and even dough balls to accompany your meals. But, you can also purchase wine, beer, desserts, Tony’s Chocolate, sea salt, olive oil and also kitchen utensils like a wooden spoon or Joseph Joseph herb cutters etc. The main extras I tend to add weekly are naan breads for £0.95 as we seem to have one curry-based dish per week, plus every 2-3 weeks as a treat I’ll add either a Tony’s Chocolate bar or the Creative Nature cake mixes.
Gousto discount

Gousto Christmas box
They do have themed recipes appropriate for the season we’re in, but not a completed Gousto Christmas box. Now we’re in November, they have started offering festive meals like their Festive Cheeseburgers, or started to put their own twists on a Christmas Dinner. But you can also add Pigs in Blankets as a side too. In the weeks leading up to Bonfire Night they had a meal tailored to that, plus the Gousto recipes adapt based on the seasons i.e. swapping lighter meals in the summer for hearty casseroles in the autumn.
Have you tried Gousto?
*This post contains affiliate links. By signing up to a Gousto subscription, even if just a one-off box, I will receive credit in my own Gousto account to spend towards my next weekly box. It does not cost you any extra, but does mean you get better savings than Gousto’s own new customer offer.
I wish something like this was available in my country. It’s so difficult to find anything like this over here. Or, at least, something that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.
I love a subscription box – they get me cooking so much more and are so convenient. And yes to pigs in blankets as a side with everything, please! xx
I keep meaning to try these! Thank you for the review – they look brilliant!
*Adds to to-do list*
We’ve used gousto in the past as well, maybe I should get another few boxes just to make life easy over the Christmas holidays
We love Gousto – the recipes are always so tasty, and not beyond my rubbish cooking abilities either! I love that they have a great vegetarian range 🙂 Am slightly disappointed that delivery costs are going up quite a bit soon but I guess they were pretty low previously!
I agree about the delivery! It was another thing that was making them better than HelloFresh in my opinion, but now it’s an additional cost – means I won’t be treating myself to Tony’s Chocolate as an extra some weeks haha! x
I’m always tempted by Gousto- and these recipes sound great!
I think it is a very good idea, but I have never tried Gousto
This looks great, always wondered if it would be easier to do something like this than go do a food shop etc.
I definitely find subscription meals easier than having to plan out all my meals and checking what ingredients I need etc.
We love a good subscription box it just makes life so much simpler plus it really saves on food waste
It really does! Agree with reducing food waste, but we’ve also found it saves money too!
I’ve not tried this Subscription box, it looks really good though. I love discovering new foods and recipes.
I’ve not tried gusto before. We’ve done hello fresh, but only ever when there’s been a deal on with it. I didn’t realise you could get so many extras with gusto though. That’s so cool.
Is everything wrapped individually in plastic? I love the idea of these boxes, but I just can’t enjoy it when I’m left with a huge heap of single use plastic at the end. I’m not the best at being environmentally friendly, but I do try.
The meat comes in plastic packaging and then some vegetables also, like bags of spinach, rocket, herbs etc. but other than that it’s nowhere near as much plastic as you’d experience when buying the same things at the supermarket in my experience 🙂
Ooh sounds lovely – I’ve never tried Gousto before but I’m tempted by their festive offering, sounds delish
